Calving Season
From January to March, the short-grass plains of Ndutu (Southern Serengeti / Ngorongoro Conservation Area) become the stage for one of Africa's greatest natural dramas — the Great Migration's calving season. Up to 8,000 wildebeest calves are born every day, creating a feast for predators. After a day in Tarangire's baobab country, you'll spend two full days in Ndutu witnessing cheetahs, lions, and leopards in hunting mode, then descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a final game drive before departure.

Tarangire National Park

After breakfast, depart Arusha for a scenic 2- to 2.5-hour drive through local Maasai plains directly to Tarangire National Park, a destination famous for its iconic, ancient baobab trees and life-giving seasonal river. Upon arrival, embark on a full-day game drive across the park's diverse landscapes, home to massive elephant herds—often hundreds strong—alongside lions, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and over 500 vibrant bird species. Pause midday to enjoy a packed picnic lunch at a designated scenic overlook with sweeping views of the Tarangire River and surrounding wildlife below. Enjoy a scenic journey through the highlands, arriving at your lodge or camp in time for lunch, followed by an afternoon game drive across the expansive short-grass plains. During the peak calving season (December through March), Ndutu transforms as hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles gather to give birth, creating a bustling natural nursery. This rich concentration of young prey draws intense predator action, making it one of the best locations to spot lions, cheetahs, leopards, spotted hyenas, and jackals on the hunt. Following an early breakfast, set out on a scenic drive toward the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater, the largest intact volcanic caldera on Earth. Descend 600 meters (2,000 feet) down the steep crater walls onto the lush, 260-square-kilometer floor for an exhilarating game drive. Home to one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa, the crater offers prime opportunities to spot the Big Five—including rare black rhinos, heavy-maned lions, giant tuskers, and massive buffalo herds—alongside hippos bathing in the Hippo Pool. Enjoy a picturesque picnic lunch at the Lake Magadi or Ngoitokitok spring site surrounded by grazing wildlife. In the early afternoon, ascend back up the rim and begin your return drive to Arusha. Arrive in the late afternoon to early evening, where you will be transferred directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your evening flight home.
